Chair for Maghreb Studies

Chairholder: Francesco Cavatorta

HEI established the Chair for Maghreb Studies to further the development of international studies focused on North Africa.

This chair, the first of its type in the Americas, dedicates its post-secondary teaching, research, publishing, and other activities to its area of specialization. Exploring such topics as water, sustainable development, agri-food, international affairs, and international peace and security, the Chair takes a keen interest in contemporary realities specific to the strategic and geopolitical context of the Maghreb region. Further perspective is provided by linking this context to developments in the Euro-Mediterranean and North American worlds—especially Québec and Canada—with which cooperation and trade are expanding at a remarkable pace. This “two-way perspective” underpins the Chair’s original approach and is key to meeting the needs and expectations of numerous actors and an increasingly diversified clientele.

The Chair also awards scholarships to HEI students who have produced outstanding academic assignments in the field of Maghreb studies.
Chair for Maghreb Studies scholarship ($500 or $1,000, depending on nature of assignment)
Scholarship consideration is based upon a written assignment on the Maghreb: term paper, essay, thesis or dissertation.
The application deadline is December 1 of each year.
